Legal Reprints of The Shadow! The original pulp adventures of The Shadow are going to be reprinted in a brand new series of pulp-sized trade paperbacks officially licensed by Conde Nast. No, I'm not talking about the Blackmask.com bootlegs, but actual new and legal reprints. Now that's pretty good news, eh? OK, here's the details. Who is behind this project? Renowned Shadow expert Anthony Tollin acquired the rights from Conde Nast and will be publishing these reprints in collaboration with Nostalgia Ventures, Inc., a leading company in the marketing of old-time radio. Where and when can I buy one? The first volume should be available mid-July. You can order from: The Shadow's Sanctum (www.shadowsanctum.com/) Anthony Tollin (sanctumotr@earthlink.net) Nostalgia Ventures (www.nostalgiaventures.com) Adventure House (www.adventurehouse.com) Mike Chomko (chomko@enter.net) Vintage Library (www.vintagelibrary.com) Bud Plant (www.budplant.com) Girasol Collectables (www.girasolcollectables.com) in Canada It should also be available at the San Diego Comic-Con and Pulpcon, and from your local comic book stores in October. A subscription option is also being planned, for those who prefer to have the latest issues mailed directly to them. How much do they cost? Each paperback will retail for $12.95 and contain two complete, unabridged, original pulp adventures of The Shadow. What's in them? Each volume will contain two pulp reprints along with color reproductions of the original cover art and all interior Shadow illustrations by Edd Cartier, Tom Lovell, Paul Orban, etc. The stories will not be reprinted in original pulp magazine publication order. Which novels will be reprinted? Priority is being given to the pulp stories that haven't been previously reprinted in mass-market paperbacks or hardcovers. Only a small fraction of the 325 pulp novels were reprinted by Bantam, Pyramid/Jove, Dover and the Doubleday Crime Club. The goal is to help fill that gap and publish many of the good stories that have never been reprinted. Here's the schedule so far: THE SHADOW 1: "Crime, Insured" and "The Golden Vulture." THE SHADOW 2: "The Chinese Disks" and "Malmordo" THE SHADOW 3: "The Red Blot" and "The Voodoo Master" THE SHADOW 4: "The Murder Master" and "The Hydra" THE SHADOW 5: "The Black Falcon" and "The Salamanders" THE SHADOW 6: "Dead Men Live" and "The Golden Masks" THE SHADOW 7: "The London Crimes" and "Castle of Doom" THE SHADOW 8: "Lingo" and "The Cobra" How often are they coming out? Volume 1 is coming out early; it's already at the printers and will be available in mid-July. The rest will be published on a regular basis beginning later in the year. How about Doc Savage? Yes, Doc Savage is also going to be reprinted! How's that for more good news?! The official rights have also been acquired from Conde Nast for the pulp reprints of Doc Savage. They will be released similarly to The Shadow: two pulp reprints per paperback volume, a new book each month, retailing for $12.95. The first one is due out in November and will contain "Fortress of Solitude" and "The Devil Genghis." These are the two pulp adventures that featured the master-villain John Sunlight. The current schedule is: DOC SAVAGE 1: "Fortress of Solitude" and "The Devil Genghis" DOC SAVAGE 2: "The King Maker" and "Resurrection Day" DOC SAVAGE 3: "Repel" and "The South Pole Terror" Will Murray is helping select the Docs to be reprinted, trying to go with really-good stories that weren't reprinted numerous times by Bantam. For example, "Brand of the Werewolf" sold 185,000 copies in paperback over the years, so it's a low priority. Stories will also be considered with an eye to the outstanding original pulp cover paintings. Any other pulp characters scheduled for reprint? Yes, but the details are still being ironed out, so nothing is being said at this time. Look for future announcements. What else can you tell me? These will all feature the original pulp artwork, both the covers and the interior artwork as well. That is definitely a big plus! These paperbacks will not be fuzzy replicas, but will be sharp and clean; the type is completely reset. And rounding out each volume will be historical articles by pulp experts like Anthony Tollin and Will Murray. Where can I get more information? Keep an eye on the internet, as more information will be forthcoming. If you subscribe to any Yahoo groups that deal with pulps, you'll be reading about this new project in most of them. And the USENET newsgroups like alt.pulp and alt.fan.doc-savage will be good sources of news.
