Jericho Druke
Jericho Druke was a powerfully built and tremendously strong black man who ran an employment agency in Harlem. He first came in contact with The Shadow when, as a doorman, he got involved in a gangland battle. The Shadow's intervention saved Jericho's life. At the same time, the battle showed Druke's courage and ability. Some time later Harry Vincent brought Druke into The Shadow's unit (THE CHINESE DISKS, Nov. 1, 1934).
Jericho was of above-average intelligence and was not a stereotyped comic relief type. He seldom spoke but when he did it was normally, avoiding the dialects often seen in other pulp stories. Usually he entered when his strength was needed - carrying large objects, battling a number of thugs, or just one powerful foe. At other occasions he was used as the doorman of a hotel or some other menial job at a spot to gather information people might drop.
THE GOLDEN MASKS (Sep. 1, 1936) was his most outstanding role. Jericho had to pretend to be an African native and act superstitious while spying on a crime organization's headquarters. Not only his biggest role but proof of his capabilities other than sheer strength.
