The French and Indian War, also known as the "Seven Years War" or "The Great War for the Empire" was fought between the years of 1756 and 1763, even though many events occurred before war was officially declared in 1756. The war started when France and England both claimed western Pennsylvania as their territories. The French were aided by the Native Americans (hence the name French and Indian War.) The war eventually expanded into a global conflict as most of the major powers in Europe became involved. This war is a significant event in US history because it determined that English rather than French ideas and institutions would dominate North America. This website was created for a US History project at the Pennsylvania State University. I chose this topic because I am originally from the Pittsburgh area and I have visited many sites that were involved in the French and Indian War. I have always been interested in the history of my area and I have enjoyed learning more about this war for this project and how it affected the area that I grew up in.
In the bar above, you will find links to different sections in this site including a
timeline of events, the events that led to the declaration of war, events that led to
the French surrender to England, British forts that were built during the war, related
links, and references used in preparing this document.
